The usual fixed system solution includes an evaporator, a compressor, and a condenser. These three parts of the system all working together through the use of a liquid with special properties known as the refrigerant. The evaporator and compressor are located inside; the condenser is outside the building. Warm air inside the room heats the refrigerant in the evaporator coil causing it to evaporate. This creates cooler air which is then blown into the room using a fan. The refrigerant then moves to the condenser where it is pressurised and heats up. It then moves outside to the condenser where the super-heated gas transfers heat to the outside, and then cools and turns back into a liquid.
What few realise outside the industry is how efficient air conditioning is for heating as well as cooling. Running costs can be as little as 25% of that of central heating using gas.
